Art Director at Oregon State University College of Business

The Director is responsible for enhancing and building the brand image of the College of Business through creative communications. This position provides strategic visual brand direction and leads the development of creative concepts and materials to recruit students to the College, engage alumni, donors, volunteers and companies with the College and advance the College’s reputation locally and regionally. The Director produces visual communication pieces and ensures all communications pieces produced in the College support the overall strategy and visual identity of the College of Business and the institution.
40% Visual Communication Direction
The Director provides overall creative leadership and strategy for the College of Business visual communication efforts. The Director assesses the College of Business’ brand and develops strategic and creative visual communication concepts and materials to recruit students to the College, engage alumni, donors, volunteers and companies with the College and advance the College’s reputation locally and regionally. Visual communication oversight responsibilities include:
Develops, implements, and evaluates short and long term goals, objectives and projects of visual communications and marketing in the College of Business
Produces or oversees production of all types of communication collateral.
Oversees development and dissemination of the College’s graphic identity system and brand.
Provides OSU brand guidance and leadership to College of Business communicators and designers, ensuring consistency throughout all communication materials produced by the university.
Advises Director of Marketing on art and design.
Writes and approves print and digital production specifications.
Acquires bids from vendors directly and through OSU Printing & Mailing Services. Ensures that designers and printers meet quality standards and deadlines.
Coordinates print design and web design to ensure the graphic style of the university is met.
Consults with departments and faculty members on project needs and presents design concepts.
Oversees design and production of all visual communication projects produced by the College.
Develops, manages and reports on budget including consulting with leadership on budget resources and status updates
Hires and monitors freelance photographers, illustrators, and print and web designers, as needed. This includes coordinating with the project manager on concepts, providing art direction for these projects.
As part of the College’s marketing and communication team, develops marketing strategy and campaigns, providing guidance on messaging and accompanying graphics.
40% Design and Production for Print and Digital Communications
Designs and produces creative concepts in response to College needs, including:
Researches the need for visual communication projects, including any necessary qualitative research to understand the project end user with the ultimate goal of gaining insight needed to guide the creative process and produce successful projects.
Prepares sketches, renderings, drawings, and various artwork involving mechanical and freehand drawing and lettering.
Designs, illustrates and prepares creative concepts using a variety of media (print, web, exhibits) that may take the shape of websites and pages, emails, digital ads, brochures, annual reports, posters, flyers, letterheads, logos, certificates, forms and other newsletters and publications.
Prepares printing specifications for print shop; obtains bids and recommends contract awards; maintains contact with vendors to ensure adherence to time schedules and specifications.
Coordinates production; proofs typesetting and printing for adherence to specifications; determines if quality standards have been met.
10% Technical Support
Technical support, website maintenance and troubleshooting. This work involves working with the College of Business web developer to guide needs and provide necessary support to projects initiated by the marketing and communication team in the production of online projects; providing design and development support for projects that will improve the College’s online presence. This includes troubleshooting errors and facilitating timely solutions to problems, as well as working with the web developer to make updates to websites as needed.
Supervises, oversees and provides art direction for the projects and work of graphic designer, graphic design student employees and/or interns.
Provides leadership, supervision and direction for assigned staff including planning and scheduling work; monitoring quality; providing feedback; answering questions. The position will also be responsible for teaching graphic design best practices, online marketing tactics, front-end web development, and otherwise supporting student learning.
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Graphic Design, Interactive Design, Web Development or a related field AND five years of experience in graphic design and/or website design; OR seven years of related experience.
Online portfolio that demonstrates high quality design work.
Experience in designing for both print and online media.
Advanced experience in Adobe Creative Suite.
Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
Experience developing HTML emails with cross-platform compatibility.
Strong working knowledge of content management systems like Drupal and WordPress.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to interpret technical ideas for a non-technical audience.
