Spreedly: Senior Systems Engineer

Spreedly: Senior Systems Engineer

2018-01-08 18:53:35

Remote applicants must be located in the continental US and have existing US work authorization.

Spreedly is a stable, growing startup. We need an experienced systems engineer that can hop into a high-functioning, experienced team and start contributing quickly as we migrate our data-center based infrastructure to AWS.

Systems Engineering is our internal team that focuses on the development and operation of Spreedly’s systems through well-designed developer tooling and accountable processes. You’re building the platform on which Spreedly operates. So you might be responsible for provisioning a new component in our production environment, but you should also be thinking of how to deliver that service in a way that lets the other engineering teams use and operate it themselves. We don’t want you baby-sitting machines, we want you to be delivering functionality to the rest of the Engineering group.

The Systems Engineering team also takes on development projects that ensure the scalability and security of Spreedly’s transactional service. One such example might be implementing a secondary indexing service using Kafka, or managing the re-encryption of millions of sensitive credit card data. So this really is a true engineering role with development and operational concerns. Operating in that cross-functional sweet spot should excite you!

Spreedly’s business is working with and storing credit card data. It’s what we get paid to do so others don’t have to. So thinking about security is a way of life at Spreedly, as is building sustainable processes to keep things safe, and our auditors happy. Security enables our business, it doesn’t hinder it. You should have a healthy, practical, relationship with security too.

What we’re looking for in a Senior Systems Engineer is somebody who’s not afraid to jump into complex infrastructure and systems problems and make sense of them. We are actively migrating to an AWS infrastructure, so you will have a chance to impact and help design our next generation production infrastructure and systems. We regularly deal with the dark underbelly of software – think encryption, encoding, and security, all within the context of a distributed system. You don’t have to be an expert in any of those aspects, but you shouldn’t be intimidated by the thought of learning about them either.

  • Experience operating and building systems in AWS
  • Comfort treating infrastructure as code
  • Experience, or familiarity with, modern cloud orchestration tooling (specifically Terraform and Ansible)
  • Ability to build, operate, and deliver solutions in support of distributed systems
  • A willingness to be a generalist and dig into new things you’ve never done before
  • Excellent written communications, and a track record of documenting your work
  • The ability to operate semi-autonomously, sorting your own immediate priorities out of the ever-shifting needs of a startup environment
  • A quiet confidence in your ability to learn new tech as necessary. Today the team manages Riak, Kafka, Postgres, Redis, and Linux … but are always pragmatically evaluating new services and tools

We are open to remote candidates, with the caveat that you must be located in the continental US (we’ll want to see you in person about once a quarter). With ~40% of our team already remote we do have experience supporting remote employees. If you are remote we’d like for you to be experienced at it too, or at least make a strong case for why you’re well-suited for remote work.

Why Work for Spreedly?

We’ll answer that by telling you why we gave up relatively comfortable lives and threw everything into Spreedly.

First, we built a digital subscription service in the past that worked with multiple payment gateways. We never wanted someone to go through that alone again. Second, payments can make or break an otherwise fantastic new idea so we knew we’d be helping real businesses succeed. Finally, we wanted to build a company that reflected our ideals around balancing work greatness and life greatness – a constant tug of war, but one totally worth having.

Here is a summary of some of our benefits (the rest of which can be found at

  • Competitive salary + equity package
  • Outstanding medical and dental benefits (we pay 100% of monthly premiums for employees + families)
  • Open PTO policy
  • Tues./Thurs. in-office days- the rest of the week employees are free to work wherever they choose
  • Paid lunches on in-office days for local employees
  • 12 weeks paid Family leave
  • Company sponsored 401k
  • Yearly paid professional development

We’re constantly striving to have the fairest and most productive hiring process possible. We want to ensure that every candidate is treated equally and our interactions are designed with that goal in mind. If you want to get a sense for what your application process will look like, we’d encourage you to read the following: Stop Hazing Your Potential Hires and Programming Puzzles Are Not the Answer.

If this at all sounds interesting, we’d love to hear from you!

Spreedly is an equal opportunity employer and is working to build a diverse culture that reflects the fact that everyone in the world makes payments. We actively work to drive out even unintentional discrimination in our hiring processes via practices like blindly graded work samples and structured interviews.

Due to the sensitive nature of what Spreedly does – handling payment data – candidates must complete a successful background check. If you have concerns along those lines, please discuss with us sooner rather than later – we do not want you to waste time in the hiring process and get disqualified at the end if we can help it.

Help Scout: DevOps Engineer

Help Scout: DevOps Engineer

2018-01-04 17:14:06

We are seeking an experienced Linux DevOps Engineer to join our growing engineering team. You will have a direct impact on Help Scout’s success, while helping more than 8,000 businesses around the world. While customers love our product, it means nothing if they can’t access our services with great performance.

AWS, Ubuntu, Chef, Git/Github, Jenkins, Docker/Compose, AWS Aurora MySQL & PostgreSQL, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Redis, New Relic, Sensu, PagerDuty, Ruby, Java, PHP

About the Role

  • No matter what you want to call it – DevOps, site reliability or operations – the majority of your time will be spent building, deploying, securing, managing and optimizing highly-available, fault-tolerant and horizontally scalable systems in AWS.
  • You’ll be working on a small, nimble team of six (that includes one of our co-founders) and in collaboration with our software developers to design tools and processes that support and improve the entire engineering team while implementing SaaS best practices.
  • The engineering team is spread across the world from Hawaii to Helsinki, and at this time we are ideally looking to add more coverage in the PST to CT time zones in the US.
  • You could be working on a variety of upcoming projects, such as implementing a solution for rolling out deployments to isolated customer groups, working with the team to transition to Dockerized deployment management and orchestration, in addition to improving our ability to deliver high availability to our customers.
  • Our engineering teams communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When your code is ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with test cases and tag your team for review (often over a video and screen-sharing session). We are investing heavily in continuous integration and delivery and strive to uphold immutable infrastructure standards. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.
  • In order to ensure excellent service to our customers, you will be part of our rotating on-call team.

A note about on-call

  • The 5-week rotation follows this format: 1 week on backup on-call (which rarely sees much action), 1 week of being on-call, followed by a 3 week hiatus from on-call.
  • Our on-call shift is not particularly wearisome, but as a thank you for carrying the pager for the week, the day following your shift is a free day off if you want to take it. We want you happy, healthy and well-rested!

About You

  • You have a deep understanding of what it takes to run web services at scale and have a solid understanding of Linux systems internals and networking; from kernel to shell, system libraries, file systems and client-server protocols.
  • You have experience with orchestration tools and could identify the benefits and pitfalls we will encounter as we transition to containerized production deployments.
  • You became an engineer because you like building systems, tools or products that help people.
  • You design and build systems that work well and fail gracefully.
  • You’re a great communicator and have an excellent command of written and spoken English. As a remote company, we rely on clear communication for collaboration and execution.
  • You are proficient and comfortable in the AWS ecosystem.
  • You write code that other engineers can easily read and understand and you welcome reviews and feedback from your peers. You are comfortable writing tests and you thoroughly verify your work before you deploy.
  • You are adept at automating service and infrastructure configuration and deployments via configuration management tools such as Chef, Puppet or Ansible.
  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea. You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work and time-management style to be remote-friendly.
  • You are helpful and empathetic and care about building on our company culture that embraces these qualities.

New Classrooms: Production Engineer

New Classrooms: Production Engineer

2017-12-21 16:49:01

About the Role

Because we’re in the middle of a complete replatforming, we’re supporting multiple legacy environments while a separate department (Software Engineering) builds the new one. Each time Software Engineering completes a component of the new platform, Production Engineering partners with them to ensure launch readiness and do the actual launch, and then takes over the maintenance and enhancement of that component. This role can be remote.

About You

You seek out worthwhile challenges, thrive in complexity, and find satisfaction in making complicated things simpler. Your technical depth is matched by your depth of character; nothing is ever “someone else’s problem” to you. Your teammates can always count on you in a pinch; you exhibit grace under pressure. You’re always learning and always improving. You let nothing stand in your way because success is the only option when serving the greater good.

About the Technology

New Environment

  • Angular 4+, and therefore TypeScript

  • Modern RESTful services built with .NET Core 2+, C#, and OAuth 2 / OpenID, all running on a PaaS and not tied to any particular OS

  • Microsoft SQL Server

  • MongoDB for distributed caching and Redis for distributed locking

Legacy Environments

  • Various JavaScript frameworks including AngularJS, React, Knockout, and Sammy.js

  • Old-school sites and console apps built with .NET Framework 4+, C#, ASP.NET, SignalR, and Microsoft SQL Server, all running on Windows VMs

  • MEAN (MongoDB, Express, Angular, Node.js) running on a PaaS

  • Python (with Django and Celery), RabbitMQ, and PostgreSQL, all running on Linux VMs

Both environments

  • Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services

  • Serverless: Azure Functions and AWS Lambda

  • PaaS: Azure Web Apps and AWS Elastic Beanstalk

  • IaaS: Azure Virtual Machines, AWS EC2 instances, and various other services

Atlassian: JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Bamboo

  • C# expertise. We’re also open to candidates who are strong in another language and interested in switching.

  • Solid understanding of REST, HTTP, and Internet/web/cloud fundamentals.

  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL.

  • Familiarity with JavaScript (especially TypeScript and Angular), HTML, and CSS.

  • Extraordinary attention to detail.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.

  • Expertise in anything listed under “Legacy Environments” above is a plus.

  • On-call duty, but don’t worry, we get it. The leadership of New Classrooms includes a recovering former Google SRE. We respect your time.

Application Information

Equal Opportunity

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, creed, color, national origin, ancestry, marital status, affectional or sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, nationality or sex.

Work Authorization

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.
